For several years, most of Oklahoma was
included in what was called the Indian Territory
until about 1893.

The Indian Territory section was divided into
Indian Territory and the Oklahoma Territory, the latter being thrown open to white settlements.
Many Indian legends and traditions are recounted
in connection with the springs surrounding the county. Indians brought their sick here
for 500 years.

The Cherokees and the United States made the Hopewell Treaty in 1785, which forced them to relocate between the St. Francis and White rivers in what is now known as Arkansas. The earliest date mentioning Sulphur was about 1867.
