Area Information

After Oklahoma became part of the United States in 1803, it was included in the Indiana Territory. In 1812 it was combined with the Missouri Territory, and in 1819 with the Arkansas Territory. For several years, most of Oklahoma was included in what was called the Indian Territory until about 1893.

The Indian Territory section was divided into Indian Territory and the Oklahoma Territory, the latter being thrown open to white settlements. Many Indian legends and traditions are recounted in connection with the springs surrounding the county. Indians brought their sick here for 500 years.
 
    
  The Cherokees and the United States made the Hopewell Treaty in 1785, which forced them to relocate between the St. Francis and White rivers in what is now known as Arkansas. The earliest date mentioning Sulphur was about 1867.

Summers are hot and humid with daytime temperatures near 100 degrees common from July to September. Humidity frequently exceeds 50 percent. Thunderstorms are common April through July. Winters are mild with temperatures rarely dropping below 32 degrees for more than two or three consecutive days.
    
Sulphur contains a variety of restaurants, a golf courses, tennis courts, and in Davis our Sister city is Treasure Valley Casino. Other recreation, culture & entertainment facilities are numerous and varied.

Sulphur Public Schools have a total enrollment of 1,340 students and 89 teachers. 73% of graduates attend college, drop-out rate averages below 3%. Oklahoma School for the Deaf was moved to Sulphur in 1908. In 1982, the school was designated as a statewide resource center for needs of deaf children and school districts across the state. OSD has 160 employees. 3 universities and a community college cooperate to serve thousands of area students.

Arbuckle Memorial Hospital is an award-winning county-owned 34-bed general acute care hospital; also operates 15 crisis intervention beds and is contracted to provide mental health services for 9-county area. The Lifestyle Center of America is a world-class $8 million facility providing physician-supervised residential lifestyle change programs, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, etc.

The Oklahoma Veterans Center, Sulphur Division, provides long-term care, has a capacity of 132 nursing care beds and 10 domiciliary beds, and is authorized for 193 full-time equivalent employees.

Sulphur Oklahoma, is the seat of Murray County and home of Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Also known as "Mountain Oasis," Sulphur is in a beautiful lake area of the Arbuckle Mountain Region. Sulphur is centrally located midway between the cities of Ada (27 miles) and Ardmore (31 miles.) Oklahoma City is 73 miles and Dallas is 130.

Sulphur is a picturesque, rustic area with natural freshwater and mineral springs and streams. It is ideal for camping, swimming, hiking, picnicking, fishing and bicycling. There is a new multi-use trail for mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding.

Sulphur adjoins the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, a national park, on the south side and is minutes from the clear waters of the Lake of the Arbuckles. Our sister city, Davis, 7 miles west of Sulphur, is the home of Turner Falls Park. Turner Falls is a 77-foot waterfall rushing to the foot of the Arbuckle Mountains through Honey Creek.

Arbuckle Wilderness, an exotic animal park is nearby with a scenic drive-through, park rides, horseback riding and hayrides.
